Stanley Cosgrove (1911–2002) was born in Montreal and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and the Art Association of Montreal under Edwin Holgate. He held his first solo exhibition in 1939 and subsequently spent four years in Mexico, where he worked alongside muralist José Clemente Orozco — a pivotal experience in his development. Known for still lifes, landscapes, and figure studies praised for their serenity and quiet compositional strength, his work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
