Franz Johnston (1888–1949) was a founding member of the Group of Seven and one of the most prolific Canadian artists of his generation. Born in Toronto, he trained in Germany and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before returning to Canada. He participated in the Group of Seven’s inaugural exhibition in 1920 at the Art Gallery of Toronto. His style is distinguished by a decorative use of pattern and colour and a deepening fascination with the qualities of light on snow — a theme that runs through his luminous northern landscapes of Ontario, Quebec, and the Arctic. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and is buried alongside his fellow Group of Seven members at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario.
